Kharupetia Town developed its name from 'KHARU'. During the pre- independent period the river Brahmaputra was flowing by this place and a steamer-Ghat was established at this location. A large bangle said "Kharu" was dug out by some cultivators at the Steamer Ghat presently known as "MELA-GHAT'. Believed that this "KHARU" was left by some devine mother of Goddess and this place received its preEnt name from this word "KHARU", This Steamer Ghat was gradually converted into present "KHARUPETIA". After establishment Town Committee under the Mimicipal Act, it has been known as "KHARUPETIA TOWN".
